Hume City election results - who's out, who's in, and who had a close call?...
The election results for Hume City have been published by the Victorian Electoral Commission.
In Emu Creek Ward, first-time candidate Kate Hamley has been named the winner, giving long-standing incumbent Jack Medcraft a very disappointing result in what must have been a stressful week.
Of the first preference votes, Medcraft received 4,953 (39.82%), Hamley 4,568 (36.73%), and Trevor Dance 2,917 (23.45%).
However, following the distribution of preferences, Hamley won with 53.32% of the vote, leaving Medcraft trailing on 46.68%.
Jarrod Bell has been re-elected to council and will represent Jacksons Hill Ward.
It was a close call though, with the final result (after preferences were assigned), showing Natalie Harrison received 6,203 (49.97% ) votes, and Bell 6,211 (50.03%). However, an appeal has been lodged for a recount.
In Aitken Ward, Carly Moore was returned to council with 9,069 first preference votes (82.86%).
In Bababi Marning Ward John Haddad was elected to the city council. He got 2,584 first preference votes, but crossed the line thanks to second preferences, giving him a total of 5,682 (51.73%) votes.
Jim Overend, who was standing for re-election won Burt-kur-min Ward with 4,112 (36.03%) first preference votes. Following the distribution of second preferences he received 6,210 (54.41%) votes.
The council’s former deputy mayor Karen Sherry is now the representative for Merlynston Creek Ward.
She received 3,657 (33.29%) of first preferences, with the final tally of 6,184 (56.29%) votes getting her across the line. One can only hope this result gives her enough time to continue her studies.
In Mount Ridley Ward, Daniel English – who raised numerous questions in council during public question time in the run up to the election – won with 6,380 (55.91%) first preference votes.
Sam Misho retained his seat on council winning Roxburgh Park Ward. He got 2,703 (23.92%) first preference votes, but second preferences saw him win with 6,211 (54.96%) votes.
Former mayor Naim Kurt won Tullamarine Ward with 6,911 (56.49%) votes.
This result sees Jodi Jackson out of office having attracted 23% of the vote. Jackson had previously said she would not stand in this election, but changed her mind at the last moment in an attempt to dislodge Kurt.
Steve Gagen has been elected to Woodlands Ward with 3,792 (33.26%) first preference votes. This result sees former councillor Joseph Haweil, one of the city’s most competent councillors, out of office. One wonders what he plans to do now he’s free of the whip.
Haweil received 5,420 (47.54%) first and second preference votes (Gagen 5,982 / 52.46%).
Ally Watson won Yubup Ward with 5,490 (53.04%) first preference votes.
