How will former mayor Jack Ogilvie be remembered?
With the passing of former Hume City mayor Jack Ogilvie, calls are now being made on social media to have a room at Sunbury’s Global learning Centre (GLC) named after him.
Other ideas include having his name on the front of the Macedon St building he was instrumental in getting built – with some saying the GLC should be renamed The Jack Ogilvie Learning Centre.
Suggestions also include having a Sunbury sports ground named after him, or a plaque made to recognise Mr Ogilvie’s civic contributions.
Born on 26 May 1947, Mr Ogilvie became a councillor in 1990, first in the Shire of Bulla, and then – following a reorganisation of local government – Hume City Council.
Mr Ogilvie enjoyed two stints as mayor, with the last one in 2008/09, and retired as a councillor in 2016, following a stroke. He served as a councillor for 26 years.
Mr Ogilvie was 77 when he passed on Tuesday 5 November. His funeral, attended by around 100 friends and family, was conducted by Rev Gavin Ward on Friday 15 November at St Mary's Anglican Church, Sunbury.
It is clear from media coverage, and countless social media posts, that Mr Ogilvie has left his mark on Sunbury. By all accounts he was an outstanding advocate for the town and its residents – even after he left office.
Now we wait for Hume City Council to play its part in deciding how it will celebrate and remember Mr Ogilvie’s life and contribution to Sunbury.
